“The cords of death entangled me . . .The cords of the grave coiled around me . . .In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help . . .He parted the heavens and came down . . .He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind . . .The Lord thundered from heaven . . .He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy . . .He trains my hands for battle . . .You broaden the path beneath me. . . I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed. I crushed them so that they could not rise . . .I beat them as fine as dust borne on the wind; I poured them out like mud in the streets.” Psalm 18
“This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. . . After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword.” I Sam. 17
Resistance comes, but God is greater! He will come down like thunder and lightning when we call to Him. He will reach down and deliver us. Yet He will also train us up, broaden our path, enable us to strike our enemies – to crush them forever.
You notice that when David faced Goliath, he struck him down and he cut off his head. Striking down the giant was not enough, he had to cut off his head to defeat him with such awesome finality so everyone would know the power of God. He no doubt lifted up the head of Goliath so that all the men that were at a distance on the hillside (they were in a valley) could see the ultimate defeat of Goliath.
God comes to our aid when we call with supernatural power and might, but he also expects us to use the tools we have and defeat and crush our enemies, our giants. To cut off the head with such force and finality that the mere act of it will live on forever, just like the defeat of Goliath. We have the power of the Lord Jesus within us – He is greater than anything we face. So through the power of the Holy Spirit speak to your giant (or giants), strike it down and crush it, and cut off its head! No giant has power over you – so pick up that sword and use it!
